The restored version of The name of the rose it's the movie on air tonight on TV Monday 23 December at 9.20pm on Rai 3. The famous 1986 film is directed by Jean-Jacques Annaudand based on the novel of the same name by Umberto Eco. Set in 1327, the film follows the investigations of the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (played by Sean Connery) and his young novice Adso da Melk (played by Christian Slater) in a Benedictine monastery in northern Italy, where mysterious murders occur.
Plot
Autumn 1327. Some mysterious deaths upset the tranquility of a Benedictine monastery. The friars become convinced of an imminent Apocalypse but the Franciscan monk William of Baskervillewho arrived in that place with his faithful novice Adso da Melkbegins to investigate and discovers much more. The inquisitor's wrath was unleashed Bernardo Gui, Guglielmo e Adso they must do their utmost to try to exonerate the unjustly accused.

The film, based on the masterpiece of the same name by Umberto Ecowon numerous awards for best photography (Tonino Delli Colli), best costumes (Gabriella Pescucci) and best scenography (Dante Ferretti), becoming a classic of cinema. The film was praised for its ability to translate the complex literary material of Eco in a visually fascinating and narratively engaging work.
Curiosity
Awards and recognitions: The film won two BAFTA Awards, including Best Actor for Sean Connery, and a César Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He has also received several David di Donatello and Nastri d'Argento;
Casting choices: Christian Slater was only 15 years old during the nude scene with Valentina Vargas, who was 22 at the time. Furthermore, Robert De Niro had applied for the role of Guglielmo, but the director decided not to cast him because he had wanted to include a scene where his character and Bernardo Gui fought with bladed weapons.
Accident on the set: During a scene where the library catches fire, Sean Connery actually caught fire. He was saved thanks to the timely intervention of director Jean-Jacques Annaud;
Literary influences: The character of the Venerable Jorge de Burgos is a tribute to Jorge Luis Borges, an Argentine writer known for his stories that explore librarian and metaphysical themes;
Invented language: The two former Dolcinian monks speak an invented language that combines elements of Latin, Spanish, Italian, French and English. This creative choice made the dialogues even more peculiar and contributed to creating an authentic but surreal atmosphere in the monastery;
Box office success: Although the film only grossed $7.2 million in the United States, it was a major success in Europe, reaching a global gross of approximately $77 million.
Shooting and Rental
The production took five years of preparation and filming lasted 16 weeks. Filming took place in several locations, including the Cinecittà studios in Rome and Eberbach Abbey in Germany. Here are all the places:
Fiano Romano: Much of the Benedictine abbey has been recreated here, including interiors such as the chapter house and the monks' dormitory. This choice was made due to the historical tradition of the area and its architectural beauty;
Castle of Rocca Calascio: Located in Abruzzo, this castle provided a scenic backdrop for some of the outdoor scenes;
Abbazia in Eberbach: Located in the Rheingau, this Gothic abbey was home to many of the film's interior scenes, including the chapter house and dormitory. Its architecture contributed to creating the dark and mysterious atmosphere typical of the novel;
Campo Imperatore and Rocca Calascio: These locations in Abruzzo provided spectacular landscapes for some of the outdoor scenes, including the paths walked by the protagonists.
