Snowboarder Sophie Hediger died in an avalanche in Arosa

Condolences in the Swiss sporting world. The snowboarder who remained under an avalanche on Monday in Arosa (in the canton of Grisons) while practicing off-piste is the Zurich athlete Sophie Hediger.

The 26-year-old Swiss Sophie Hadiger, who was part of the national snowboard cross team, lost her life on Monday 23 December in an avalanche that occurred in Arosa, in the canton of Grisons. The young woman, who was practicing off-piste, died at the scene of the accident. Hediger had found a second home in Arosa and died “freeriding, a beloved hobby of hers”, Swiss-Ski indicated in a statement released on Tuesday.

At around 1.15pm the 26-year-old snowboarder, accompanied by another person, ventured onto a closed slope in the ski area, we read in the note from the Graubünden cantonal police. The two then went outside the demarcations, where Hediger was hit by an avalanche.

Her partner immediately alerted the emergency services, starting to look for the girl. At approximately 3.30pm, Hediger was located and freed from the snow mass. However, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and the 26-year-old was declared dead, the police indicated.

Rescuers from the Swiss Alpine Club (CAS), avalanche dogs and the Rega helicopter rescue service were among others on site. The prosecutor's office together with the investigators launched an investigation.

Last season Hediger reached the podium for the first time in the world cup. In the main race in St. Moritz (canton of Graubünden) she came second; one of his dreams was to win a medal next March at the freestyle world championships in the well-known Engadine resort. The young athlete had participated in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

“We are shocked and our thoughts turn to Sophie's family, to whom we offer our deepest condolences,” said Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser, quoted in the note.
