Barack Obama shared his traditional annual list of favorite films, highlighting titles ranging from blockbusters to independent works. Among these, it stands out Dune: Parte Duedirected by Denis Villeneuvethe only film from a saga to appear in the selection.
What were Barack Obama's favorite films in 2024?
The former President of the United States has chosen ten films that represent a mix of genres and productions. Among the highlighted works we find Conclavecon Ralph Fiennes e Stanley Tucci, e The Piano Lessondirected by Malcolm Washington. Also present A Complete Unknownthe brand new Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as the legendary Duluth singer-songwriter. Finally, space also for AnoraSean Baker's romantic comedy, already Palme d'Or at Cannes.
Alongside these, Obama included less bombastic titles such as All We Imagine as Light, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Didie Sugarcane. The list confirms the former President's taste for films that combine cinematic quality and narrative depth, for a ranking that is now becoming an end-of-year tradition.
Last year, when X was still called Twitter, Obama had listed American Symphony, Leave the World Behind e Rustin as his three favorite films of 2023. In addition to these choices, the other selected films had been Oppenheimer, American Fiction, Monster, Past Lives, Air, Polite Society, A Thousand and One, Blackberry e The Holdovers.

Dune: Parte Due represents the flagship of Obama's selection. The film was a great success with both audiences and critics. After its release in March 2024, it grossed $178.5 million in its first weekend and topped $714 million globallyclearly beating the first chapter of the saga. Villeneuve's direction, spectacular sets and Hans Zimmer's score were widely praised. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film achieved a 93% approval rating from critics and a 96% rating from viewers.
The film continues the story of Paul Atreides, played by Chalamet, and delves into his relationship with the Fremen. New faces, including Florence Pugh and Austin Butler, join an already stellar cast. The plot explores themes of power and destiny, maintaining close fidelity to Frank Herbert's novel.
