Al Monza Birindelli's goal was not enough to equalize Juventus' lead scored by McKennie and score points with Juventus. Nico Gonzalez's blitz towards the end of the first half is in fact the key episode that ends up deciding the match. Yet another defeat in the championship and Venezia's consequent victory against Cagliari causes Monza to sink even further down the table. Now Alessandro Nesta's team is last, alone, with just 10 points. The coach's analysis in the post-match conference.
11.31pm – Alessandro Nesta's press conference begins
Nesta, even today Monza didn't deserve to lose. What do you think of this situation?
“I didn't like the defeat in Lecce, against Juventus the attitude was right and if we were to repeat it against opponents within our reach we can score points. The 3-5-2 gives us more balance, we can propose it again. We invented Birindelli midfielder to do the defensive phase and then start again in McKennie's area. Unfortunately we are missing a lot of players and it is clear that sometimes we also need to change. Do we have to concede different goals, the ones conceded like against Juventus are given away. They were avoidable, we need solidity which is the trademark of this team. We can do better, the opponents must do something really interesting to score on us.”
After Birindelli's goal everything seemed ready for a different match. Then what happened?
“Unfortunately, the goal conceded was avoidable. Juventus didn't do who knows what. It's sad to lose like this, there's always something that spoils the game for us. It's now a constant”
Has the team felt the sense of danger even more now that it is last?
“The perception of danger has been there for a few weeks because unfortunately we are last. I'm sorry because the performances were there but the players are aware of the situation we are experiencing. The tactical changes to restart? Sometimes we can play with two attacking midfielders and times with three midfielders. The problem is that for a long time I only had two players in the role, namely Bianco and Bondo. Unfortunately Sensi now doesn't have the level to play 45 strong minutes, in my opinion. Birindelli's invention as a midfielder was also dictated by this need. Birindelli is a soldier, he does what you tell him. When he scored I thought we could win.”
Why did you give Sensi a few minutes?
“I did an evaluation of his legs, Sensi is slowly growing but I didn't consider him suitable for a match like this where the defensive phase was greater than the offensive one”
