Sony Animation and Netflix are working on a new animated film based on the universe of Ghostbusters. The news comes as the two companies are already collaborating on an animated series inspired by the famous franchise. Internal sources confirm that the project is in the early stages of development and will be directed by Kris Pearndirector with experience in both Sony and Netflix productions.
The new film is part of a larger project to expand the Ghostbusters universe. The recent release of the live-action film Ghostbusters: Glacial Menace (March 2024) has revived interest in the brand. In parallel, Sony and Netflix are developing a completely new animated series. The goal is to diversify the franchise’s offeringinvolving a transversal audience with innovative products.
What we know about the new animated Ghostbusters movie
As reported by Deadline, sources close to the project suggest that this new animated film could have an impact similar to that achieved by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel. Film that, in addition to having grossed over 1.2 billion dollars globally, they have revolutionized the animated genre in franchises that tend to be popular for their live-action.
Deadline also reports that the direction will be entrusted to KrisPearnwell-known director of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys. With a career spanning both Sony Animation and Netflix, Pearn represents a figure of continuity and trust for both partners. No details about the plot have yet been disclosed. Even the release date, obviously, remains shrouded in mystery.
