What are the names of artists which particularly shone during the 2024? Now in late December it is easy to take stock of what has happened in the previous twelve months, with the box office data highlighting who, in the world (or in Italy) has particularly stood out in the world of cinema.
Timothée Chalamet
The golden period of the actor continues, exploding internationally thanks to the leading role in the film “Call me by your name”. Since then a series of choices and characters have confirmed its constantly growing success. In 2024 he returned to the big screen with “Dune Part 2” (among the highest grossing of the year) and next year he will try his hand at Bob Dylan.
Cillian Murphy e Christophen Nolan
Released in 2023, Oppenheimer triumphed on Oscar night with the film’s main actor, Cillian Murphy, and director Christopher Nolan as protagonists. Both took home the statuette thanks to their performance and direction of the film respectively. An absolute consecration with the victory also in the “Best Film” section.
Riccardo Milani and Paola Cortellesi
The couple (in life) is a symbol and synonymous with success even in the cinema. If Cortellesi’s directorial debut – There’s still tomorrow – was released in 2023, the months of 2024 gave even more life to the film, which sold well abroad, from Spain to France via the United Kingdom to Norway. Riccardo Milani, however, confirmed the response thanks to “Un mondo a parte”, a comedy starring Antonio Albanese and Virginia Raffaele which, week after week, increased its takings to well over 7 million euros.
Tim Burton
It seemed like a gamble, for some even a risky bet after years and years of waiting. Instead Beetlejuice Beetlejuice proved to be a success at the box office, exceeding expectations also thanks to foreign markets beyond the United States. An unexpected confirmation for the director who has demonstrated once again that he knows how to express himself at his best and that he has not lost his “touch”.
Paul Mescal and Ridley Scott
Even in this case, the risk was very high. Touching a film like “Gladiator” and thinking about a sequel could have been a disaster waiting to happen. Instead, the increasingly active Paul Mescal, protagonist of the film, overturned the fears and “Gladiator 2” proved to be a success. Thanks to the direction of Ridley Scott, the film was able to convince critics and the public, surprisingly. Work is already open for the third chapter.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo
The transition from music to cinema is not always easy. Ariana Grande accepted the challenge and is the protagonist of “Wicked”, divided into two chapters, and focused, together with my colleague Cynthia Erivo, on the history of the witch of the east and that of the west before the famous film “The Wizard of Oz”. Based on the famous and classic musical, the film won over critics and the box office all over the world, demonstrating the potential of dividing the story into two chapters (with double the earnings) and the acting ability of the two protagonists.
