The Regional Civil Protection Department has issued a yellow weather alert for the provinces of Palermo and Messina. These areas will be the first to experience the imminent wave of bad weather that will hit Sicily.
Impending worsening
The worsening of weather conditions is expected starting from Friday afternoon. Temperatures will drop significantly, accompanied by showers of weak or moderate intensity. Initially, snow will fall above 900-1000 meters, but the snow level will tend to rise during the evening. Strong mistral winds, with gusts that could exceed 100 km/h, will accompany the worsening of weather conditions.
Early winter in Sicily
After a week of sun and mild temperatures, Sicily and Calabria are preparing for an abrupt return of winter. Two intense bursts of cold air will affect the southern regions during the Christmas period. The first, imminent, is caused by the passage of cyclone Dionisio and will hit the two regions between Friday afternoon and Saturday 21 December. The second eruption, more lasting, is expected in the period from 23 to 26 December.
Violent storm coming
The approaching storm promises to be particularly violent. Between Friday afternoon and Saturday night, the bad weather will intensify, with temperatures dropping by more than 10°C. Coastal cities such as Messina, Reggio Calabria, Capo d’Orlando, Milazzo and Tropea will go from 18°C in the early afternoon today to 7°C tomorrow evening, during storms and possible hailstorms. In inland areas, temperatures will be even lower, with heavy snowfall even at hilly altitudes, around 800-900 metres, and significant accumulations above 1000 metres.
Extremely strong winds and storms
In addition to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, one element of particular concern is the strong mistral wind. In the lower Tyrrhenian Sea, near the Aeolian Islands, gusts could reach 150 km/h, causing very high waves in the open sea and furious storm surges along the Tyrrhenian coasts of Calabria and Sicily. Maximum attention is recommended.
Winter temperatures over the weekend
Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday will remain cold, typical of late January or early February, an unusually cold time for Sicily and Calabria in December. The weather will gradually tend to improve after the last rains on Saturday morning, before a new worsening expected for the Christmas period, characterized by intense cold and bad weather.
