The Zurich justice system has officially opened criminal proceedings against Sanija Ameti, the co-president of Operation Libero who ended up in a storm in September for having shot an image of Jesus and the Madonna.
The public ministry of the canton of Zurich confirmed to Keystone-ATS a preview in this sense from the CH Media publications. In particular, it will need to be clarified whether the 32-year-old, who is also a Green-Liberal city councilor in the city of Zurich, was responsible for disrupting freedom of belief and worship.
At the beginning of September Ameti had posted two photos on Instagram showing her with a compressed air gun after having riddled with bullets an image of the Madonna with Jesus taken from an auction house catalogue.
The story was immediately picked up by the media and although the PVL member quickly deleted the post and apologised, she was fired from the public relations agency she worked for and was the subject of a dozen criminal complaints.
The criminal proceedings concern suspicions of disruption of freedom of belief and worship, the Zurich Prosecutor’s Office indicated today, specifying that the presumption of innocence applies until a final sentence is reached.
At the moment it is not possible to predict when the investigation will be completed.
Last weekend Sanija Ameti announced her return to active politics in an interview. This evening the weekly meeting of the city council of the city of Zurich will be held, of which Ameti has been a member since May 2022 and where she has been absent for the last three months.
