Superman, James Gunn reveals how Chris Pratt’s experience with Star-Lord helped him choose David Corenswet
According to what James Gunn told the microphones of ComicBookchoosing the right Clark Kent was simple also thanks to the experience with Guardians of the Galaxy, specifically for the role of Star-Lord that went to Chris Pratt. The director and screenwriter said he took inspiration from casting process of the Marvel Studios when he cast Chris Pratt as Star-Lord.
So, I always took inspiration from those casting processes. I’ve always believed that casting is the most important thing and that as long as the actor is the best actor possible for that role, it’s more important than a name. I just wanted to go for who the best Superman was.
The director reasoned that today pure celebrity no longer influences box office success as it once did, so he chose his protagonist by evaluating other more important factors. David Corenswet he is the one who brought home the result and he is a name that the small screen audience has gradually come to know in recent years with The Politician, Hollywood e Parallel linesas it appears in Pearl e Twisters. Superman, however, will be his first major leading role. At the time, however, the choice of Chris Pratt for Star-Lord also surprised the public quite a bit, since he was not known in the action genre and did not even have the appearance of a hero. Thinking about Superman, James Gunn revealed that many have done so the audition for the role:
I was so insanely nervous about preparing for Superman, the first day the tapes arrived, I had seen [David] Corenswet in Pearl, so I said ‘Let it in, let it in.’ I said, ‘Let’s proceed.’ The first day I arrived, I saw David’s tape and Rachel Brosnahan’s tape, and I saw them together and I thought it would be fine, because they’re both amazing. Then we did something that I never did for Guardians of the Galaxy, which was I put the two protagonists together, they went in together and made this 15-minute scene in which they had to talk, discuss and communicate. I mixed and matched all the different couples and it was magic when they came on stage. I have to say it was one of my greatest cinematic moments.
