Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddlingwith two years suspended and the requirement to wear a electronic bracelet for the last year. The Court of Cassation rejected the defense’s appeal, confirming the sentence on appeal in 2021. Sarkozy’s predecessor, Jacques Chiracwas the only other French president convicted of corruption in 2011, after leaving office. Sarkozy, 69, was found guilty of trying to bribe a judge, Gilbert Azibertoffering a job in Munich in exchange for inside information about an investigation into his 2007 campaign finances. The judge was also convicted. Sarkozy has been involved in other legal proceedings. He will face another trial for corruption and illicit financing in connection with the alleged case next year Libyan support to his 2007 presidential bid. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison.
