Dybala-Roma, a finished story. Andrea Di Caro’s comment in the Gazzetta

The very high salary and low returns, the choice to focus on Soulé, the mirage of the big clubs which however never arrive. Will Galatasaray solve everyone’s problems?

Roma-Dybala, hypothesis of farewell to second act. Or maybe third or even fourth. Since the club brought him to Rome three seasons ago, there has not been a transfer session in which there has not been talk of the possible departure of the fragile talent. On the other hand, when Roma managed to convince him with an impressive coup, it was the player himself who demanded an exit clause at rock-bottom prices for abroad. Paulo, who was welcomed like a king, would have liked for his career more prestigious footballing places and those used to winning. Once the renewal with Juventus was over, it seemed he could move to Inter. Nothing done. So in the last round, thanks to the closed doors of the major European clubs, he thought that in Rome he would still be the absolute protagonist again (in Turin he had been overshadowed by Ronaldo) making himself attractive on the market again. But after the first year, various attempts to join top-tier European clubs failed. In the meantime, thanks to an upward contract with rich bonuses, his salary has become a real luxury for Roma’s coffers. Especially considering the many, too many, games missed due to injury, the fears that often lead him to withdraw, the fact that he is less and less decisive (only two goals this year in Serie A, one of which was a penalty).

no all’arabia

Last season, with De Rossi, Dybala pulled out at the crucial moment due to pain not better identified by the MRIs. This is why the club had bet on Soulé in the summer, hoping that the Argentine would pack his bags. Also explaining to him that he was no longer at the center of the project. But once again Paulo didn’t find any big clubs willing to take him. Then, when an Arab club showed up at the end of the transfer window, Roma – who had even sat down to negotiate for a few pennies in order to get rid of the salary -, they didn’t have the strength to push him to accept. Leaving him the choice and the responsibility in front of the fans. Also weighing on the club is the automatic renewal for next year at even higher figures in case of number of appearances (8 of them would be missing for at least 45′). So in the end Dybala remained to the delight of the fans (but many today are disappointed by his performance) and much less the club. De Rossi knew it well, Juric knew it and today Ranieri also knows it, having elegantly said in an interview yesterday: “If he wants to go, we have to accept it”. But who says that?

destination

Beyond the clause (which no club seems willing to pay) if Roma wanted, they could keep him or at least declare him indispensable. Especially in a delicate situation like this. The reality is that the love story between Dybala and Roma has already ended for quite a while: as is obvious when a club believes that its overpaid champion performs little and does not shine through sacrifice and when the champion knows that his the club wouldn’t mind leaving at all. It was better to leave early. Maybe it will happen in January, if Galatasaray is willing to offer him a rich three-year deal. Or maybe in June. But neither Dybala, nor the club or the fans deserve this back and forth which highlights little clarity, little courage and an inelegant passing of the buck.
