IND vs AUS: Here’s what would happen to India’s WTC fortunes if the Brisbane Test ends in a draw

The Brisbane Test provided maximum entertainment at the box office after the show was ruined by rain on several occasions. To avoid a continuation of the match, the remaining batsmen of the Indian team showed intent as Australia struggled to eliminate them from the equation. With the performance of the Men in Blue, the Brisbane Test could end in a draw, adding plenty of intrigue to the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Matchday five is also expected to be a rainy day and a draw seems to be the best case scenario. While Australia will try to avoid it, let’s analyze how a draw could affect India’s chances in the World Test Championship final.

A draw would be the best-case scenario if day five of the Brisbane Test turns out to be a rain-soaked affair. At the moment, the Indian team is still 193 runs down but has foiled the hosts’ plans to force a follow-up. If the third Test match is also hampered by interruptions due to rain, the match will go towards the logical conclusion: a draw. If that were to happen, the series would remain at 1-1, with two matches remaining in Sydney and Melbourne. Unfortunately, problems could arise for the Indian team if they lose the third Test match. This will also be a big problem for the guests who will have to make the most of the remaining two matches.

If the third Test match ends in a draw, India and Australia will each receive three points after the match. This will bring the Men in Blue’s point total to 114. However, their point percentage will decrease and reach 55.88%. India will remain in third place while Australia will remain in second place with 58.88%. At the time of writing, South Africa currently leads the table with 63.33 percentage points.

In case the third Test match at The Gabba ends in a draw, the Indian team will have two matches left and cannot afford any mistakes at this stage. Their best bet would be to win the games in Melbourne and Sydney. They either have to win all remaining games or get a win in one game while drawing another. This way they will end up occupying second place in the WTC points table, just above Australia.
