Foreign Pages, 17 December 2024. A bomb hidden in an electric scooter killed a senior Russian official in charge of Moscow’s nuclear defense forces.

According to sources from the Reuters news agency, the attack was carried out by the Ukrainian secret services (Ukrainian Security Service – SBU). The source said Kiev regarded Kirillov as a war criminal and an “absolutely legitimate target,” accusing him of ordering the use of banned chemical weapons against warring Ukrainian forces.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces, was killed on the morning of Tuesday, December 17 in front of a residential building on Ryazansky Boulevard, about 7 kilometers southeast of the Kremlin.

“Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and his assistant were killed,” the investigative committee said. Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a law enforcement official, that the explosive device “had a capacity of approximately 300 grams of TNT equivalent.”

The images published on Russian social media show the two lifeless bodies lying in the snow. The explosion apparently occurred when Kirillov and his collaborator left the building they were in.

Russia’s Radioactive, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops are special forces operating in conditions of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination.

Ukrainian prosecutors on Monday accused Kirillov of using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine. Russia has denied and rejected the accusations.

Two months ago, Britain imposed sanctions on Kirillov and his forces over reports of the use of chloropicin, a toxic agent whose use is prohibited by international conventions. Foreign Pages
