Patrick Mahomes suffered a sprained ankle and his condition will be re-evaluated this week ahead of Kansas City’s next game against the Houston Texans.
The Chiefs will return to practice Tuesday before playing Saturday and it’s possible Mahomes practices during the week. A source told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that there are no long-term issues.
The quarterback twisted his ankle when he was tackled by two Browns defensive players as he threw his pass on a missed fourth down by the Chiefs, who won 21-7. He limped and grimaced in pain.
Reserve Carson Wentz came on with a little more than 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, while Mahomes remained on the sidelines during his team’s final two offensive sequences. The two-time NFL MVP said he would have tried to get permission to play if the Browns had gotten within a possession of his team.
Mahomes has a history of ankle injuries, including a similar one suffered in Week 1 of 2019 against Jacksonville. The most notable, however, came in the 2023 playoffs, when Mahomes was injured in the divisional round victory over the Jaguars, before playing through pain to successively defeat Cincinnati and Philadelphia en route to winning the championship. The Chiefs quarterback has less time to recover since the team only has a short week before facing the Houston Texans on Saturday. This short week will be followed by an even shorter one, as the Chiefs travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Christmas Day.
The Chiefs (13-1) are two games ahead of the Buffalo Bills for first place in the American League. The Bills, however, hold the tiebreaker. The Texans are assured of the title in the South section of the American, while the Steelers lead in the North of the American and are qualified for the playoffs.
The Chiefs will end their season against the Broncos in Denver.
