This Tuesday, December 17, the European Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize to Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, figures of the Venezuelan opposition. Since the controversial re-election of Nicolas Maduro, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia has lived in exile in Spain, while Maria Corina Machado has been forced into hiding. The Venezuelan opposition is more persecuted than ever a few days before the inauguration of Maduro, whose victory is contested throughout the world.

At the end of the year, the regime of Nicolas Maduro intensifies its repression Venezuela. Every day, human rights figures are arrested or threatened, adding to the 1,800 political prisoners already behind bars, including around forty teenagers.

The government is also continuing a legislative offensive, aimed at preventing any dissenting voice, whether from opponents or NGOs, on the Nicaraguan model.
