A page of history unfolds in real time before the eyes of our team.

This is a historic turning point for Syria. On December 8, 2024, the regime of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by Islamist rebels after a lightning offensive led by Islamist rebels. Just a few hours after the fall of the clan that had ruled the country for more than half a century, our reporters entered Damascus. In the heart of the capital, they witnessed the takeover of the city and its strategic places, some of which were completely closed to the population.

The report by our special correspondents, François Xavier Ménage and Olivier Cresta, documents the situation on the ground as it is playing out. We see the signs of the rout of the loyalist army, incapable of repelling the rebel advance, abandoning in haste its vehicles and the strategic posts which until then padlocked the country. The scenes of jubilation in the streets of Damascus bear witness to the immense relief and hope of the Syrians after fifty-four years of dictatorship imposed by the Assads, father and son. For fear of reprisals in a country subject to chaos, others prefer to leave the country.
