A road incident involving a deer occurred this Saturday December 14 around 12:15 p.m. on the Nationale 31 between Compiègne and Trosly-Breuil in Oise. The animal, chased by the crew of hunting the Futaie des Amis on Mont Saint-Mard, caused two accidents of the road.
Course of events
The deer jumped on top of a sedan, lightly touching its roof, before falling onto a utility vehicle, seriously damaging its hood and windshield. After the collision, the animal fled towards the forest, seriously injured according to witnesses.
Stanislas Broniszewski, spokesperson for the AVA collective (Abolisons la Vénerie Today), present on the scene, says: “We were patrolling on the N31, just at the bottom of a slope where the hunt was taking place. Shortly after the accident, we saw two damaged vehicles. »
Reactions and consequences
This incident recalls a recent case in Clermont, where the surprise intrusion of around thirty hunting dogs also disrupted an urban area, prompting the mayor to consider filing a complaint against the hunters.
This is not an isolated case. Every year we see similar incidents where deer, stalked by packs of dogs, are killed or cause accidents. These practices are dangerous and outdated. We demand an outright ban on hunting with hounds.
Antoine Gallon, spokesperson for the Société de Vénerie, adds: “Collisions between wild animals and vehicles are frequent, with approximately 25,000 incidents recorded each year by insurance companies. These collisions rarely occur during hunts. »
Security and ethics debate
This incident reignites the debate between opponents and supporters of hunting with hounds.
Releasing dogs into the wild without control can only lead to chaos and accidents. In addition, local residents often feel unsafe when they see animals being stalked in populated areas.
The AVA spokesperson also believes that hunting reflects outdated practices and raises concerns within local communities. According to him, hunters claim “rights” over these forests, which contributes to unequal relationships and conflicts with local residents. The collective also criticizes the lack of responsiveness of the authorities, perceived as often « favorable » hunting with hounds.
As for itself, the Société de Vénerie insists on the legality of this practice and the security measures implemented, including security vehicles and panels who report the presence of dogs and animals near roads.
Rather than condemning an ancestral practice, it would be more constructive to work towards better cohabitation between human activities and wildlife. Hunting is strictly regulated.
This incident takes place in a context of growing tensions between the defenders of hunting with hounds and its opponents, each sticking to their positions regarding the safety and ethics of this controversial practice.
