This Saturday, December 21, 2024 in the morningon the outskirts of the wild market of La Paillade in Montpellier, a group of around ten people wearing hoods and armed with machetes, mortars and axes caused panic. Shortly after 9:30 a.m., these individuals targeted several stands, doused trucks with gasoline and caused violent altercations. A woman suffered facial injuries, requiring medical intervention.
This attack marks a new peak in the escalation of violence surrounding this underground market. For several weeks, tensions have continued to grow. The Paillade clandestine market, active for four years, has taken root as an extension of the official Mosson market.
Three days a week, 72 illegal exhibitors sell tens of tons of goods, generating an estimated turnover of 500 000 euros per day. Fruits, vegetables, fish on the ground…: everything is sold in conditions that defy hygiene rules and legislation. Legal traders, who pay rent and charges, denounce “unfair competition”.
Political mobilization
Faced with this explosive situation, Isabelle Perrin, candidate for the 2026 municipal elections, visited the site several times to see the extent of the damage. She directly contacted the Ministry of the Interior by submitting a complete file with photos and supporting evidence. For her, this inaction is costly, not only in financial terms, but also in terms of trust in institutions.
