Meeting Tuesday between the United States and its European allies, Rome announces
The foreign ministers of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy will discuss the latest developments in Syria on Tuesday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio announced on Monday Tajani.
“We hope that the first positive signals will turn into concrete positive signals,” Tajani told diplomats at a conference at the Italian Foreign Ministry.
This virtual meeting comes as Western countries are increasing contacts with the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), at the head of the coalition which took power after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
The European Union’s (EU) top representative to Syria is traveling to Damascus on Monday for talks, after the United States and Britain said they had made contact with the new authorities in the Syrian capital. Italy, which holds the presidency of the G7 in 2024, this year appointed an ambassador to Damascus for the first time in more than 10 years.
