This Saturday, December 14, the Guingamp firefighters celebrated Sainte-Barbe. The opportunity for the head of the center, Captain Yann Cozic, to take stock of the year 2024. A year full of 2,454 interventions (for 2,952 machine trips), which represents, on average, seven interventions per day.
10.6% drop in interventions
However, “this represents a decrease of 10.6% in the number of interventions compared to 2023, due in particular to a drop in personal rescue activity (- 8%) and a fortunately calm summer season in fires. “natural spaces”. In detail, two thirds of interventions are devoted to personal rescue (64% of interventions), while fire exits represent 17% of the activity and 13% for road rescue.
Captain Cozic remembers three which were notable. First the house fire in Ploumagoar, on July 5, located on the entire first floor. “Despite a delicate situation, the responders managed to quickly become masters of the fire, thus preserving part of the home.”
Then, on November 1, firefighters had to deal with “a large-scale fire in the city center of Guingamp, at Carrefour City. This intervention, made complex by the overlapping of the different premises, was tough.” Finally, on November 14, a fire broke out in a mansion in Plouisy. “This grueling intervention made it possible to evacuate and protect certain property from the home, despite a very virulent fire.”
The rescue of a newborn in Guingamp
Sainte-Barbe Day was an opportunity to honor firefighters. Seven of them were awarded the Medal of Honor for ten and twenty years of service. Two others, Master Corporal Laura Salliou and Corporal Thomas Pasquer, received a testimonial of satisfaction for “having succeeded, through their responsiveness and skills, in resuscitating a newborn in cardiac arrest when they arrived on the scene. locations, November 22, 2023, in Guingamp. Their actions were decisive for this baby, who is now in great shape.”
Two volunteer firefighters, Jacky Le Mouel and Pierrick Louis, have decided to retire after thirty and thirty-one years of service. “They were recruited as municipal technical service personnel and immediately took up the career of volunteer firefighters. Both represent an example of consistency for our young recruits.” In a context where, notes Captain Cozic, “the problem of staffing is a reality that affects all emergency centers. Together, we persevere in our work to guarantee optimal security for our territory.”
