Yes, this decision by the commissioners will perhaps have consequences on the outcome of the world championship, on the manufacturers' side. But generally speaking, we must admit that Alpine negotiated its Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix incredibly well. Thus, with a car less efficient than the Haas, Pierre Gasly will start fifth, two places ahead of Nico Hulkenberg. While Kevin Magnussen, once again perfected on a lap when it counts, fails in fourteenth place, far from the potential of his machine…
Gasly vs Haas F1 : 1-0!
It now remains to finish the job knowing that the simple fact of staying ahead of the two Haas could allow Pierre Gasly to secure his team's ranking. Unless there is a completely unbridled race, something that can happen on the Yas Marina track. Particularly with possible safety cars…Here are the comments of the two drivers as well as the boss. Knowing that Jack Doohan, sixteenth in the penalty game, will perhaps have his contribution to make….
Pierre Gasly: “I am very happy with today's result. The team worked extremely hard all weekend and we managed to improve our performance between free practice and qualifying. I didn't feel too comfortable in the car and we approached them without really knowing what we could achieve. We manage to qualify ahead of George [Russell]on pole last week, and just behind Max [Verstappen]the reigning world champion, which shows how much we have progressed this season. Nico [Hülkenberg] is ahead, so the battle is clearly on and it will be intense until the end. A different exercise awaits us tomorrow. With full fuel, this track tends to test the tires, so we will do our homework tonight to be able to stay in touch with Nico in the race. »
Jack Doohan : “A new day of experience during a Formula 1 weekend under my belt and my first qualifying in the car. I'm obviously not happy with the result, but it was a learning session that we will debrief before the race tomorrow. I felt comfortable behind the wheel in my first run and I think we could have squeezed more out of it in my second attempt. We didn't have the cleanest exit lap with traffic management and track position, hence the tires outside their optimal window at the start of the lap. However, it is something we can learn from to progress in the future. I am now focusing on the work to maximize tomorrow's race and help the team maintain sixth place in the championship. »
Oliver Oakes, Team Principal : “This incredibly close qualifying today is testament to the current level of competitiveness at all levels of the grid in Formula 1. Once again, Pierre put in an excellent lap to put himself in good position for the race as he will start sixth. Arriving in Abu Dhabi, we knew it would be a learning weekend for Jack. He showed great promise while gaining confidence throughout the sessions. I know he probably would have liked to get a little more out of it, but it's a good lesson for next year and I'm convinced he can get back into racing. Some of our main competitors will start ahead of us, which is to their credit. Haas and Nico [Hülkenberg] seem notably fast here since the start of the weekend. We know our goal and we are aware that we will have to evolve at our best level to achieve it tomorrow. »
