In Nigeria, 10,000 people have died in army jails since 2010, as part of the conflict against Boko Haram, in the Borno region, in the north-east of the country. This is what Amnesty International denounces in any case.
These 10,000 dead were local residents, survivors of Boko Haram and detained by the army because they were accused of complicity with the terrorist group.
Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International Nigeria, calls for light to be shed on these deaths and for the survivors, some of whom have since been released, to be taken care of by the government. He also urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an investigation.
« Traumatized »
« Our goal is to draw attention to those who lost their lives in military detention, but also to those who came out. Some are traumatized or psychologically and physically damaged and have been abandoned. Some have disabilities that they can't even treat. This is why we are trying to alert the government about these cases », he said to Eva Massy.
« We demand that authorities investigate the deaths and ensure that those who survived are not forgotten. There was no justice, no plan to care for the survivors. We believe that the most important thing to end this crisis is that justice be done. Without justice, the conflict will continue. So far, there has been no effort to investigate these 10 000 dead », Recalls Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International Nigeria.
