Former Werder captain Niklas Moisander has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39. The central defender left Bremen in the summer of 2021 after five years and chose to join Sweden, signing for Malmö FF. Unfortunately, due to an arm injury and a torn cruciate ligament, he was only able to play three matches for the club this year.
“The last few days have been very difficult. This fall I’ve had a lot of time to reflect and I’ve made the decision that it’s time to call it quits. It’s time for me to pass the baton to more talented people. young people and to end my football career This decision was not easy for me,” Moisander explained. “Right now it’s hard to find the words; so many emotions are coursing through my body. I left Finland at 17 and since then I’ve had both good and bad times, like anyone who has a long career. I always dreamed of playing football, and it was an honor to be the captain of the Finnish national team.”

Moisander left his homeland for the Netherlands, where he won three league titles with AZ Alkmaar and Ajax Amsterdam. After a season with Sampdoria in Italy, he joined Werder Bremen in 2016, where he made 142 appearances and scored three goals. With Malmö he celebrated three more league titles. He has also represented Finland in 62 international matches and was named Footballer of the Year in his home country in 2012 and 2013.
