The political storm continues to blow over France. Since the activation of 49.3 for have the text of the Social Security budget (the PLFSS) adopted without a vote, this Monday, December 2, 2024, by Michel Barnier, the situation has become even more tense in the upper echelons of power.
The Prime Minister is more than ever threatened with censure, as two motions of censure have been filed against the government. The NFP and the National Rally are threatening to vote on them, and the government could indeed fall.
To try to save his skin, Michel Barnier will answer questions from Anne-Sophie Lapix and Gilles Bouleau this Tuesday, December 3, live from Matignon, from 8 p.m.
Follow his speech live on TF1 and France 2.
Michel Barnier soon to be replaced? Already rumors
If a motion of censure is adopted, it means that the government must resign. And as the far right and the left threaten to vote for it, this scenario is indeed possible. So Michel Barnier could jump. And already, names are circulating about his successor. François Bayrou or Sébastien Lecornu are in pole position among the names that the President of the Republic would test.
Unless Emmanuel Macron decides to rename Michel Barnier (and he has the right to do so). The President of the Republic also spoke this Tuesday evening on the motion of censure: he said he did not believe in the vote of censure against the Barnier government.
Why did Michel Barnier activate 49.3?
The political soap opera is not easy to follow, so here is a little reminder of previous events. It is indeed the PLFSS which crystallizes the tensions between the presidential camp and the oppositions.
As a reminder, the Assembly had not voted on the Social Security budget, due to lack of time, but the Senate had voted for it and the two parliamentary chambers had agreed, in a joint joint committee, on a text .
Except that the Assembly, where Michel Barnier's government does not have a majority, would undoubtedly have rejected it. After unsuccessful negotiations with the RN, the Prime Minister, as the Constitution authorizes him, therefore used 49.3.
