In a landmark development for women’s Football, illustrious two-time FIFA World Cup winning coach Jill Ellis has accepted a full-time role at FIFA as Director of Football, sparking enthusiasm within of the global football community.
Based in Zurich and announced on Tuesday, Ellis’ appointment aligns with the renowned Arsène Wenger, Head of Global Football Development at FIFA. This dynamic duo have been collaborating since 2021, with Ellis previously leading FIFA’s technical advisory group for women’s football. Their collaboration is expected to improve the governance and development of women’s football globally.
Ellis has enjoyed remarkable success with the United States national team, winning back-to-back World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. She has been a key player in promoting FIFA President Gianni’s ambitious vision Infantino, aiming to increase the frequency of World Cups every four years to every two years. However, this proposal met with strong resistance from European and South American football authorities and was ultimately shelved.

The creation of the position of Director of Football highlights FIFA’s determination to cultivate a diverse, inclusive and accessible football community, reinforcing the idea that football is a sport for all.
