Hydrochloric acid escaped from a truck this Tuesday morning at the Beneo Orafti company site in Oreye. The situation was quickly brought under control.
Around 1140 this morning, hydrochloric acid escaped from a truck on the Beneo-Orafti company site in Oreye. The leak occurred during an unloading activity, at the truck level. Quickly, a medical intervention plan was triggered by Liège 112 which led to a large deployment of emergency service resources: helicopter, ambulances, firefighters, and police. Mayor Jean-Marc Daerden went to the site, as did the commander of the relief zone. These operations were under the command of Lieutenant Mottet at the fire operations level.

The situation was quickly brought under control, but 9 workers were injured in the eyes due to irritation. Indeed, they were caught in a cloud of this leak. They were taken to hospital as a precaution, and are suffering with varying degrees of problems.
And for the neighborhood?
At this time, the cause of this incident remains unknown. It will be up to the Beneo-Orafti site to investigate and study the situation. The incident took place only on the site. There is therefore no fear for neighbors or people living nearby. The confinement of residents was therefore not ordered according to the mayor of Oreye.
