The eastern route of the China-Russia gas pipeline, which has the largest gas transport capacity for a single line in China, has been fully connected, its operator announced yesterday, Monday.
The pipeline has also reached full capacity, with an annual transportation volume of 38 billion cubic meters, according to the China Oil & Gas Pipeline Network Corporation (PipeChina).
A flagship project of energy cooperation between China and Russia, the cross-border gas pipeline consists of a section of 3,000 km in Russia and another of 5,111 km in China.
The Chinese section of the pipeline begins in Heihe, a city in the northeast of the country bordering Russia, and transports natural gas from Siberia south to Shanghai, China’s economic and financial center.
The complete connection of the pipeline significantly improves the natural gas supply capacity and peak shaving capabilities in case of emergency in densely populated eastern China. It also marks the completion of the country’s Eastern Strategic Energy Corridor, PipeChina said.
Since the northern part of the Chinese section was commissioned in December 2019, the pipeline has transported more than 80 billion cubic meters of natural gas, benefiting a population of around 450 million along its route. trace.
The China-Russia Eastern Gas Pipeline is the third long-distance cross-border pipeline to supply gas to the country, after the China-Central Asia and China-Myanmar oil and gas pipelines.
