IF summer has its fire risk lotthe winter season is far from being spared. The sources are different but the fires are also numerous. But, as the head of the Uzès rescue center repeats, captain Alexis Pietteprecautions can limit the risks.
Fire in winter: the importance of maintaining your heating installations
The arrival of cold weather triggers the start-up of the various heating devices in the home and, with it, their essential maintenance. “As for gas boilers, it is necessary to have it checked every year by a professional heating plumber that combustion is occurring properly to avoid the risk of poisoning with CO2, an odorless gas,” calls back the firefighter.
THE frying pans et chimneys must also be swept every year. “The risk, if this is not done, is that the bushel will split and the flames will spread into the attic and the roof,” recalls Alexis Piette. “The ideal is even for the conduit to be tubed all the way to the top to ensure good waterproofing.
The professional thus checks the good condition of the conduit in addition to cleaning it. “It is also prudent to have the electrical panel checked by a professional, because loose screws, for example, can create sparks…”. Finally, small electrical appliances such as space heaters can also present a risk if they are used continuously, “they should only be turned on to bring a room to temperature”.
The Prefecture of Gard issues a reminder on carbon monoxide poisoning
In a recent press release, the Prefecture of Gard reminded us of the danger of risks linked to carbon monoxide poisoning, which is even more common in winter. “Since the beginning of October 2024, 22 people have been poisoned by carbon monoxide in Gard. 16 have been hospitalized, 2 of whom had to be treated in a hyperbaric chamber, and two people have died”specifies the press release.
Carbon monoxide poisoning: how to avoid it?
- Have combustion appliances intended for heating and the production of domestic hot water serviced regularly, at least once a year, by a qualified professional.
- Have the smoke evacuation ducts swept every year by a qualified professional.
- Ventilate homes daily.
- Never obstruct the ventilation grilles, even in extreme cold.
- Never use generators inside buildings or in enclosed spaces: operate them exclusively outdoors.
The Prefecture reminds us of these preventive measures every winter, insisting on the non-use of appliances not intended for heating. As a reminder, the installation of an autonomous smoke alarm detector (Daaf) is mandatory in all homes.
The obligation to clear brush, the famous OLD
One house in two destroyed by fire is poorly cleared. The first phase of clearing takes place from October to February: cutting trees, shrubs and branches and organizing large prunings. “With the fall rains, the brush will be heavy,” warns Alexis Piette. “It is important to get started”.
The homes affected by the legal clearance obligations are listed on the Prefecture's forest fire hazard map (inquire at your local town hall). They concern an area of 50m around the home.
