Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Monday held the government responsible for the Social Security financing bill, a first 49.3 which should lead it to fall this week, the National Rally having announced that it would vote to censure the government in unison with the left.

And now ? Michel Barnier on Monday held the government responsible for the Social Security financing bill through article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows adoption of the text without a vote but exposes the government to a motion of censure. Now what will happen?

RN deputies in support of the NFP

The office of the National Assembly will meet on Tuesday around the president of the hemicycle, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the six vice-presidents, the three quaestors and the twelve secretaries. They will include the examination of motions of censure on Wednesday's agenda. In less than 48 hours, Marine Le Pen will take to the podium to defend the National Rally motion. Insoumis Eric Coquerel will be the speaker of the New Popular Front.

The left is not going to vote, on principle, for the RN text. Which implies that the frontist party's motion will not succeed. On the other hand, the 124 deputies of the far-right party will lend their voice to the NFP motion. Direct consequence: the government of Michel Barnier will fall immediately. As of Wednesday evening, he will be considered to have resigned and his sole power will be to manage current affairs.

Faced with the emergency, since a budget must be presented before December 31, Emmanuel Macron will have to appoint a Prime Minister very quickly. This is why, at this stage, several avenues are put forward by the president's entourage: immediately reappoint Michel Barnier or convene a technical government composed of senior officials. For the Head of State, the stakes are high: not to appear as the next fuse.
