Being able to manage a crisis quickly and effectively is a necessity to protect the population, infrastructure and reduce potential impacts. It is precisely to prepare for such situations that Wallonia decided to strengthen its crisis management capabilities.

Last Thursday, the Walloon government approved the new regional risk analysis. This plan was meticulously studied and prepared by the Center for Coordination of Risks and Transmission of Expertise (CORTEX).

Ten priorities put forward by the CORTEX as part of crisis management in Wallonia

The Walloon government has validated a new regional risk analysisdeveloped by the Center for Coordination of Risks and the Transmission of Expertise. This analysis makes it possible to draw up a complete inventory and identify the main social, environmental and economic issues in the Walloon Region. In addition, the press release published by the executive specifies that the plan includes the identification of risks likely to specifically affect the Region, as well as the definition of the actions necessary to reduce their potential impacts.

In its report, the CORTEX highlights ten specific priorities:

  • drought;
  • epidemics and the spread of new diseases;
  • geopolitics;
  • heat waves;
  • computer crime;
  • flooding (overflow and runoff);
  • misinformation;
  • electrical outages;
  • attacks on regional vital/critical infrastructure;
  • environmental pollution.

Wallonia commits to following an action plan for 2025-2026

The CORTEX also makes around thirty recommendations within the framework of the plan d’action 2025-2026. These include the need to raise awareness of drought, strengthen water management infrastructure and integrate European warning systems. There is also talk of putting in place an intersectoral crisis plan to anticipate health needs, based on lessons learned from the Covid crisis; to fight against espionage, to prepare crucial supply chains for the regional economy, to strengthen cybersecurity in Wallonia, to pursue the recommendations resulting floods of 2021or to intensify the fight against emerging pollutants.

“The Walloon government is committed to closely monitoring the implementation of this action plan and to guaranteeing transparent communication with citizens and the Walloon Parliament,” assured Minister-President Adrien Dolimont. “This analysis and preparation work marks a major step forward in building a better prepared and resilient Walloniacapable of effectively protecting its inhabitants and essential infrastructure in times of crisis,” he concluded.
