This Tuesday, December 10, 2024, a new “Research” video was published on the ENVT YouTube page entitled “Escherichia coli, a pathogenic bacteria for humans and animals”. It highlights the work carried out by the “Pathogenesis and commensalism of enterobacteria” team led by Professor Eric Oswald (Toulouse University Hospital) of the Digestive Health Research Institute (IRSD).
E. Coli, valuable ally or threat? IRSD researchers respond.
Did you know that a bacteria called Escherichia colinicknamed E. colican be both a valuable ally and a threat to our health?
At the Digestive Health Research Institute (IRSD), the “Pathogenesis and commensalism of enterobacteria” team led by Professor Eric Oswald is carrying out research on this bacteria which populates our digestive systems. Whether harmless or responsible for disease, this micro-organism has not yet revealed all its secrets.
In this video, dive into the heart of the IRSD and discover the work of researchers and practitioners from ENVT, Toulouse University Hospital, INRAE and INSERM.
The IRSD, an institute dedicated to understanding and combating intestinal and liver diseases.
The history of the IRSD begins in January 2016. Several research teams working in different fields such as the pathophysiology of the digestive system or intestinal motility disorders have come together to form a research structure with a common vision of the promotion and prevention of digestive health.

The institute is headed by Dr VergnolleINSERM research director in Toulouse, and by his deputy, the Pr. OswaldUniversity Professor and Hospital Practitioner. To meet their objectives ofimprove understanding of the physiology of the digestive systemthe IRSD was structured into 6 teams and two platforms:
- Team 1: “Pathophysiology of the intestinal epithelium” led by Nathalie Vergnolle and Céline Deraison
- Team 2: “Pathogenesis and commensalism of enterobacteria” led by Eric Oswald
- Team 3: “Intestinal neuroimmune interactions” led by Gilles Dietrich
- Team 4: “Iron metabolism: from regulation to therapy” led by Delphine Meynard
- Team 5: “Erythroferrone and martial homeostasis” led by Léon Kautz
- Team 6: “Interactions between the environment and the intestinal epithelium – from stem cells to associated pathologies” led by Audrey Ferrand and Frédérick Barreau
