This morning, Thursday November 28, a presentation on the fight against piracy of sports content took place at ARCOM (Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication).

This event was an opportunity to unveil a study carried out in the months of October and early November on pirate consumption in Ligue 1 since the start of the season. It was commissioned by the League from the Ipsos institute. The observation is clear.

A massive movement despite effective measures

Clear and negative. For Benjamin Morel, the departing general manager of LFP Média: “This is a top priority subject, a very worrying situation! We are in a context of dangerous shift.“It must be said that the figures revealed are massive.

Despite its availability divided between the DAZN platform and beIN Sports, the French Football Championship suffers enormously from piracy. 37% of people questioned by the study who watched Ligue 1 this season did so illegally via pirate streams.

These are available via IPTV, social networks or encrypted instant messaging applications. 27% have also started doing so since this season. The prices charged by DAZN are most likely the first to blame.

55% “pirates” in front of OM-PSG

On October 27, the classic duel between OM and PSG took place, broadcast on the DAZN streaming platform. During this event, ARCOM congratulated itself on having blocked more than 300 illegal sports streaming services ahead of the match.

However, the study reveals that more than one in two viewers, exactly 55%, had seen the Parisian club win 3-0 illegally.

Benjamin Morel adds: “Since the start of the season, we have been facing a phenomenon of unprecedented scale… and I weigh my words. In such a context, DAZN, broadcaster of most of our matches, suffers from pirate competition while the interest in L1, its flagship product, is undeniable. Prices cannot in any way justify piracy which is theft and, I remind you, illegal.

Perhaps you are one of the users of IPTV or other indirect solutions to watch Ligue 1. Perhaps you are also one of the 59% of pirates who do not know that you are illegal. In any case, French football players still have a lot of work to do to reduce this practice.

In the meantime, the DAZN service is preparing to launch a new exceptional offer this Friday, on the occasion of Black Friday. Its monthly subscription must therefore increase from 29.99 to 14.99 euros per month. An opportunity for some, perhaps, to become legal.
