We took many angles to talk about yesterday’s CH match. Whether it’s Juraj Slafkovsky’s playing time, shots on goal or Brendan Gallagher’s hits, there are angles to keep in mind.
But we need to talk about it from another angle.
This season, the Canadian is 0-9-3 when allowing the first goal of a game. We are talking about the only club in the National League which has no winnings this season in such circumstances.
As the CH has a record of 7-11-3, it is easy to deduce that when the CH scores the first goal of a game, it has a record of 7-2-0. This is really, really good.
Last year, the Canadian was the team that lost the most games in the league by a margin of one goal. The offense is not good and the club is having trouble playing catch-up hockey.
This statistic is proof of that.
Bob Gainey once said that overcoming a one-goal lead isn’t as easy as you think since it involves scoring two goals. He’s still right.
The Canadian, currently, doesn’t exactly have the ammunition to get out of there. After all, even if Martin St-Louis brews his fruit salad, there are elements that don’t make it taste better.
And adding an ingredient that has been hurt for a year (yes, I know, my metaphor is starting to run out of steam) won’t change everything all at once.
The guys will have to work harder and the defense will have to be tighter. After all, if young defenders give fewer chances to score, the opponent should score less. If the goalkeeper is fit, obviously.
This is clearly an aspect to work on for Martin St-Louis.
