Two loud explosions were heard several kilometers around in Castres this Tuesday, November 26 shortly after 10 p.m., causing questions and concerns. “It made my house shake,” says one resident.
Ultimately more fear than harm. The detonations were linked to the bursting of two enormous tires of a 72-ton crane truck near the hamlet of Tournemire at the entrance to the Tarn sub-prefecture on the Brassac road on the departmental 622. While he was descending from the Sidobre towards Castres, the machine saw a first tire explode then a second a hundred meters further on, leaving pieces of burning rubber and metal on its path. Part of the axle was indeed torn off.
The driver managed to stop the heavy goods vehicle in the right lane of the road and escape the cabin unscathed. National and municipal firefighters and police intervened, alerted by numerous calls from local residents. The emergency services had to plug the diesel leaks from the truck because of the damage caused by these bursts and ensured that other tires would not explode in turn.
The police blocked the Brassac road during the intervention. The Department's road services were also present to clean the roadway. Traffic had to be restored to one lane while waiting for a specialized tow truck to evacuate the crane truck.
