The national fire-fighting plan produced “remarkable” results, thanks to its implementation a month before the usual period. According to Abdelghani Boumessaoud, inspector at the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), “prevention operations are more important than firefighting ». « This is the year we recorded the fewest fires since independence“, he said yesterday Monday on the airwaves of Channel III of the National Radio, where he was the guest of the show La Rédaction matinale. The official announced a significant reduction in fires in 2024, with only 732 outbreaks recorded in 35 wilayas, leading to the destruction of 3,384 hectares of forests. Boumessaoud underlines that this drop in the number of fires, compared to previous years, results from the implementation of the new system developed by the National Forest Protection Commission (CNPF) and the mobilization of aerial resources, without which this feat would not have been possible. Despite record temperatures and a scorching climate which marked the summer season, “preventive operations carried out by different services, such as Sonelgaz, the DGF, public works directorates, local authorities, agricultural operations, as well as the mobilization of air resources, have made it possible to significantly reduce forest fires“, he added. Furthermore, Boumessaoud calls for renewing this system and strengthening preventive operations.
