Israel will act ‘strongly’ if Lebanon deal violated, Katz says

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday that his country would act “strongly” in the event of a violation of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, announced as “close” by the United States.

“If you do not act, we will, and with force,” said Israel Katz, quoted in a press release from his ministry, during a meeting in Tel Aviv with the UN special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

“Every rebuilt house in southern Lebanon in which a terrorist base is established will be demolished, every rearmament and regrouping of terrorists will be attacked, every arms smuggling attempt will be foiled, and every threat against our forces or Israeli citizens will be immediately destroyed,” he said.

Katz also demands “effective enforcement” from UNIFIL, the international peacekeeping force in Lebanon. According to the Israeli statement, Mr. Katz insists that the implementation of the ceasefire must include effective enforcement and monitoring, including preventing weapons smuggling and domestic production of weapons by Hezbollah .

Mr. Katz insists that Israel will show “zero tolerance” to any violations of the ceasefire.
