The first Argo beacon deployed
At the start of the Vendée Globe, ten skippers volunteered to deploy Argo beacons during their world tour, provided by Ifremer (French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea), the objective of which is to enrich the scientific database by collecting information in little-explored maritime areas. These are autonomous robots, equipped with sensors to measure the temperature and salinity of water up to 2000 meters deep, today essential for operational oceanography and knowledge of global warming or marine currents. But their density is still insufficient in certain strategic areas, such as currently in the South Atlantic. Yoann Richomme, Oliver Heer, Kojiro Shiraishi, Sam Goodchild, Sébastien Marsset, Guirec Soudée, Szabi Weores, Jingkun Xu, Fabrice Amedeo and Maxime Sorel, who dropped out, are these volunteers. And the skipper of Paprec Arkéa was the first to release his beacon this Tuesday.
