Colin Fortune has officially been appointed as the new manager of the Athlone Town women’s team, marking a notable progression in his distinguished footballing career. Announced Tuesday November 26, 2024 at 1:52 p.m., this youngster from Athlone returns to his roots with a wealth of experience under his belt.
Fortune, originally from Athlone, has a rich history at the club, having previously played and managed the men’s team. His journey, through the various stages, is testament not only to his commitment to Athlone Town, but also to his talents demonstrated with Kildare County, Dundalk and Galway United. Fortune also had the honor of captaining the Republic of Ireland military team at the prestigious Military World Games, solidifying his credentials in the world of football.
In a statement shared on athlonetownafc.ieFortune expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying it was an “honour” to manage the Athlone Town senior women’s team, especially as they are the reigning league champions. He said: “It’s fantastic to return to elite football and lead a team that competes at the highest levels of Irish football and on the European stage in the Champions League.”

The move comes after a memorable season where former manager Ciarán Kilduff led Athlone to their first ever Women’s Premier Division title. However, after a disappointing defeat to Shelbourne in the Women’s FAI Cup final on 20 October, Kilduff decided to step down. His departure was officially confirmed on the night of the cup final, and he has now taken charge of the Dundalk men’s team, which is currently facing significant financial challenges.
