Pressure is mounting on the Ukrainian front. And, on the Russian side, the fighting continues hard on the ground. The recruitment campaign for new soldiers is in full swing in the country. The goal is to reach 15% additional Russian soldiers.
On a bus, the Russian army is recruiting fighters. “The motherland is calling you”proclaims an inscription on the vehicle. The France Télévisions special correspondent was able to attend interviews, from village to village, in the Belgorod region. The first candidate works in a school in a neighboring town of 1,000 inhabitants. Arguments are presented to him: he currently earns 200 euros, with a contract in the army, he would earn, each month, ten times more for a one-year commitment in the conflict zone. Another situation, the deliveryman from a neighboring store has just finished his military service, but he is not convinced by a commitment. “I aspire to a civil life, to peace”he explains.
A soldier serving at a second recruitment point says money isn't everything. “These days, people are coming in droves because they see the tactical situation on the ground and that our soldiers are advancing.”
Despite everything, Russian regions compete for incentives. In the Moscow metro, advertisements advertise 50,000 euros for a one-year contract, or nearly 10 years of the average salary in the poorest regions of Russia.
