COAG warns of unjustified drop in vegetable prices at key time of season

The Coordination Committee of Farmers’ Organizations (COAG) of Almeria warns of the widespread drop in prices of vegetables, and more particularly of long Dutch-type cucumbers. This trend occurs in the 47th week of production, a key moment of the season, without any valid or justified reason explaining this situation, which places prices below production costs on the markets of Almeria and the coast of Grenada.

“At the moment we are faced with traders who send products to the customer without a price (i.e. selling at a low price), an action which lowers the price at the source and which is expressly prohibited by the law of the chain,” said the president of COAG Almeria. “COAG Almeria would like to draw attention to these price crises, as there is no solid justification for these fluctuations. Neither the weather, nor the demonstrations in , nor the treaties with third countries offer a coherent explanation for what is happening,” emphasizes Andrés Góngora, secretary of COAG Almería.

In this sense, continues Mr. Góngora, “they are just clouds of smoke, trial balloons, used to hide the true intentions of mass distribution. These are excuses, ruses, which allow them to pay less to the farmer and earn more, especially in the agreements concluded with large distribution companies and supermarket chains. This is why we call on the responsibility of the marketing sector of Almeria and Granada, so that it remains strong and does not succumb to these pressures and deceptions. » Thus, COAG Almeria “maintains contact with different producers during these days and at the beginning of next week the appropriate decisions will be made on the actions and mobilizations to be implemented if the situation does not change, without excluding the possibility to organize a draw in front of those mainly responsible for the situation,” warns Góngora.

This morning, Hortyfruta activated the “yellow alert” for certain key products such as the long Dutch-type cucumber, warning of a worrying situation of “instability”. In this sense, a large number of farmers have contacted the COAG Almeria to report that the fall in prices is reaching unsustainable levels, falling below production costs in a large number of cases “We understand that the inter-profession is cautious, although this prevention is not incompatible with it. the agility required by these fluctuations that are so harmful to agriculture and whose aggressiveness, sometimes, forces us to act without wasting time. From COAG Almeria, we want to make it clear that we, farmers, prefer to throw away part of our money. production at a given time if this helps stop the fall in prices and reduce the crisis period, provided that the entire sector does so,” concludes Mr. Góngora.
