In May, airline tickets were already falling to several foreign countries. This time, in June, prices are falling to almost all destinations, with the notable exception of French destinations.

Stimulating demand

“Airlines are clearly playing on the price factor to fill the peak summer season as much as possible,” explains Frédéric Pilloud, digital director of the B2B airline ticket sales platform MisterFly. This trend “should continue in July and August with the counter-effects of the Olympic Games,” adds Frédéric Pilloud.

Which countries will see the most significant price drops in June 2024, compared to June 2023? Spain (-12%), Algeria (-16%), Thailand (-9%), Egypt, the United Kingdom, Guadeloupe (-8%). But also, outside the Top 20, Indonesia (-12%), Japan (-15%), Brazil (-15%).

Enough to boost demand? “Promotions have helped to raise sales levels in July, without however making up for the delay in this month,” estimates Frédéric Pilloud. For the time being, according to all travel professionals, activity remains down in July.

Airfares: an overall drop of 1.9%

All countries combined, the average price of tickets sold decreases by -1.9%, compared to June 2023 (after +0% in May, +0.8% in April, +0.5% in March, +2.6% in February). For comparison, according to INSEE, consumer prices nevertheless increase by 2.1% in May 2024 over one year.

In terms of destinations, Morocco, Spain and Tunisia form the top three, exactly as in May. Egypt, in difficulty since autumn 2023, gains three ranks. The island of Malta, six ranks.

In total, the airline ticketing specialist MisterFly of the Digitrips group analyzed 113,589 tickets booked in economy class in May 2024.
