While the cities and municipalities of Vaudreuil-Soulanges will present their budget for 2024 in the coming weeks, Neomedia questioned the salary of municipal elected officials in the area.
Although this data is public, it is often difficult to find. If technically they should be on your Municipality’s website, this may not be the case.
It is relevant to understand how the salary of municipal elected officials is established. First of all, no pre-established salary scale for municipal elected officials exists.
According to the Act respecting the treatment of municipal elected officials: “the council of a municipality fixes, by regulation, the remuneration of its mayor or prefect and its other members. The regulation may provide that the remuneration will be indexed upwards, where applicable, for each financial year starting from the one which begins after its entry into force.
In addition, in order for the salary to be approved, at least four of the six councilors and the mayor must vote in favor of the proposed amount.
Total compensation depends on several factors. It includes a base salary for the functions for which the person is elected. Added to this, an expense allowance.
Additional remuneration may be added if the elected official is part of an executive committee, if he or she sits on a representative body, a consultation table, at the MRC or at the CMM.
How much did your elected officials earn in 2023
As mentioned above, it is not easy to collect the data.
The salaries listed in our research are those for 2023. Why? Because this is the most recent data available to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
They are taken from the 2023 financial reports sent by each of the municipalities and whose fiscal year ended on December 31 of the same year. Salary includes base pay, expense allowances and any other additional remuneration.
The elected official who was the most paid in 2023 is the mayor of Rivière-Beaudette and prefect of the MRC of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Patrick Bousez, with a total of $184,208.
Data for the municipalities of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, Saint-Clet and Sainte-Justine-de-Newton had still not been published at the time of writing these lines.
As for the Municipality of L’Île-Cadieux, the remuneration of elected officials has been set at $0, since they are volunteers. The mayor, Daniel Martel, however, receives remuneration from the MRC. However, salary data from the MRC was not available.
The population data for municipalities are those from the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
