Five years after the fire at Notre-Dame and a few days before the reopening of the cathedral, what relationship do the French have with the building? Nearly half of them plan to visit it after its reopening, according to a Verian study carried out for La Croix published on November 24.
An extraordinary project which has attracted the support of the French. A few days before the reopening of Notre-Dame, what are the feelings of the French towards their beloved cathedral? Nearly half of them (47%) plan to visit it after its reopening, including a quarter “definitely” and 6% very quickly, according to a study by the Verian Institute carried out for The Cross published on November 24. Three-quarters of practicing Catholics also expressed their intention to visit the cathedral.
Carried out on a sample of 1,000 people between September 29 and October 1, the study reveals that one in two French people say they are attached to the cathedral. 53% of French people surveyed said they were attached to Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, including 14% who even said they were “very attached”. This rate is particularly high among practicing Catholics (81%). Although they are further behind, 44% of French people of no religion or of another religion say they are attached to the monument.
know-how of French craftsmanship
And what about the construction site? For 65% of French people, the completion of the work on Notre-Dame in five years is above all a demonstration of the know-how of French craftsmanship (65%), followed by an architectural feat (52%). Practicing Catholics stand out by also considering this project as a symbol of France’s capacity to unite (51% against 35% on average) and proof of successful cooperation between Church and State ( 42% versus 20%).
