The Swedish biologist and anthropologist Svante Pääbo, who received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2022, will receive the honorary badge of doctor honoris causa from the University of Liège on December 17, the academic institution announced on Thursday. The distinction will be awarded during a lecture by the professor held as part of the Major Scientific Conferences of ULiège.
Professor Svante Pääbo is Director Emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, located in Leipzig, Germany. A pioneer in paleogenomics, the Swede received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2022 for the complete sequencing of the genome of Neanderthals and the founding of this discipline which goes back to the depths of DNA to shed light on the human genes today.
On December 17, the professor will give a lecture at the University of Liège entitled “An Archaic Perspective on Human Origins”.
The University of Liège has placed the 2024-2025 academic year under the theme “Sciences, Liberties, Democracies” and is thus honoring several scientific personalities. It was announced that this theme would determine the choice of this year’s honorary doctors, whose badge is presented individually, and not during a collective ceremony like in previous years.
