Formula E takes the fast lane: the modified F1 circuit in Jeddah will host the February E-Prix.

Formula E is preparing for a bold new challenge as it moves from Diriyah to a specially modified version of Formula 1's Jeddah Corniche Circuit for its Saudi Arabian E-Prix next February. This electrifying change promises a high-speed clash on the shores of the Red Sea, with a redesigned circuit featuring four new chicanes to test the skills of the all-electric grid.

A Transformed Circuit

The Formula E version of the Jeddah circuit will stretch for approximately 3.5 kilometers, incorporating significant modifications to meet the unique demands of the series. Key updates include:

  • New Chicane Complexes: Between the usual circuit turns 25 and 26, two sections of tight chicanes will be introduced.
  • Modification of the Trajectory towards the Finish Line: Two more chicanes—a left/right/left and an inverted right/left/right—will challenge drivers before the start/finish straight.
  • The Signature First Turn of F1: The lap will begin with the same iconic opening corner used in Formula 1.

These changes aim to improve braking zones and optimize lift-and-coast efficiency for Formula E cars, a crucial factor for energy management in the series.

Drivers and teams speak out

The reaction from drivers was mixed, reflecting excitement for the new venue and nostalgia for the much-loved Diriyah layout.

  • Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing) :
“It's a huge and very wide circuit with few turns. It might be a little bit like Portland, but it might lose the character of Diriyah, which was really difficult. The infrastructure will be amazing, but it will have a different vibe.”
  • Nyck de Vries (ABT Cupra, former F1 driver):
“Jeddah is going to be a different experience. I loved racing there in Formula 1, so I can’t wait to see how it plays out in Formula E.”

Why this change?

Diriyah, the former home of Formula E in Saudi Arabia, has hosted 11 races since 2018. However, construction projects in the area and ongoing track challenges, such as construction dust and a unique racing line restrictive, led to this move.

Saudi Formula E promoter CBX Group evaluated alternative locations in Riyadh before deciding on Jeddah. CBX Group leader Carlo Boutgay highlighted Jeddah's readiness to host world-class motorsport events as a key factor in the decision.

A Tribute to the Heritage of Diriyah

Diriyah was the birthplace of the Gen2 era of Formula E, with unforgettable moments such as Antonio Felix da Costa's victory with BMW Andretti in 2018. Its tight and technical layout pushed drivers to their limits and became a fan favorite. De Vries and Pascal Wehrlein each took two victories at Diriyah, cementing their legacies at this circuit.

Looking to the Future

The Jeddah E-Prix will showcase a new approach to racing in Formula E, blending the excitement of street racing with the grandeur of a Formula 1-level circuit. Although the circuit width and reduced complexity may change the dynamics of racing, this paves the way for a new chapter for the sport in Saudi Arabia.

As Formula E heads to Jeddah, fans can expect a spectacle like no other, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead!
