This new folding smartphone is going to break a record, but what is Samsung doing?

Already the record holder for the thinnest folding smartphone with its Magic V2, Honor is preparing to improve its brand with the Magic V3. Meanwhile, the design of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold is evolving timidly.

Honor has officially started teasing its next foldable smartphone, the Magic V3, on the social network Weibo. The brand reminds us that to date, the Magic V2 is still the thinnest folding mobile in the world, with a thickness of 4.7 mm when unfolded, but especially 9.9 mm when folded. And its successor will do even better.

“The Honor Magic V3 will raise the bar even higher”, promises the manufacturer, who assures that its new device will be the pinnacle of screen folding technology and finesse. The exact thickness of the Magic V3 has not been communicated, but a visual published by Honor seems to indicate that the manufacturer has managed to pass a milestone in terms of thinness. Of course, we shouldn’t trust too much in these kinds of renderings, which often don’t reflect the actual design of the product, but we at least know Honor’s intention with this new product.

Finesse, the new big trend in tech

Samsung appears less and less dominant in the folding smartphone market, which it has held almost alone for years. Chinese competition has stepped up, and brands like Huawei, OnePlus, Oppo, Honor and Motorola now offer very good products.

The thinness of smartphones, whether folding or not, is becoming an increasingly important selling point for manufacturers, who heavily highlight it in their communication. With its Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung has also made efforts to catch up in this area and offer a thinner terminal. But it should not achieve what Honor offers with its Magic V2, and therefore even less with the Magic V3.

At Apple too, the trend is towards slimming. The first device to benefit from it is the iPad Pro M4, which has even become thinner than the iPad Air, a shame. The Apple brand will also reduce the thickness of its iPhone and MacBook. The design of the iPhone 17 is expected to be much thinner, while an iPhone 17 Slim could replace the current iPhone Plus.
