The consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.3% in June from the previous month, but reduced its year-on-year rate by two-tenths to 3.4%, data showed on Friday , by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The institute explained that the moderation of the CPI to 3.4% is due to the drop in fuel prices and the fact that food prices increased less in June than in the same month in 2023.

On the other hand, the statistics highlight the upward influence on the CPI of the leisure and culture group, whose prices increased more this month than in June last year.

With the year-on-year decline in the CPI in the sixth month of the year, inflation ends three consecutive months of increases following increases recorded in March, April and May.

The INE includes in the CPI advance data an estimate of core inflation (excluding unprocessed food products and energy products) which, in June, stood at 3%, the same rate as in May and four tenths of a percentage point lower than that of the general CPI.

In monthly terms (June over May), the CPI increased by three-tenths of a percentage point, recording its sixth consecutive monthly increase.
