Despite enthusiastic criticism, many followers and a popular license, the series Scott Pilgrim takes flight stops. A year ago, Netflix dedicated an animated production to this comic book universe imagined by Bryan Lee O'Malley in 2004. Edgar Wright's film left its mark on global pop culture, suggesting real success for the serial version. It must be said that behind the scenes as well as on stage, everyone had decided to come back. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans and Brie Larson, all the actors had agreed to lend their voices to the characters they played a decade earlier in the cinema.
The operation was ultimately not profitable for the streaming service, at least not enough to justify starting work on a sequel. The sentence has just been handed down. The creator and executive producer took to X to announce this premature end. He explains: “As you know, we only had one season planned and we called in a lot of favors to make it happen. To do more would have been almost impossible. However, I know that some of you remained hopeful”.
“50 different miracles to make another season happen”
O'Malley explains that bringing the first season to fruition has already been an obstacle course. He has never hidden the difficulty for him and his teams in finding a way to continue. Last year, during an interview with Rolling Stoneshe explained: “For the moment, it is an independent series. We loved what we did. We pulled out all the stops. We have no outstanding ideas. We used almost everything. I never say never, but right now it looks like it would take about 50 different miracles for another season to happen”.
Like many creators before him, he had to resolve to build an independent season. On Netflix as elsewhere, few artists have the assurance of being offered a second round of episodes. In a context where the SVOD sector is reducing costs and doing everything possible to achieve a certain form of profitability, productions no longer have the right to make mistakes. Cancellations are legion on Netflix, many series have had to resolve to never deliver their conclusion. Some screenwriters must now find indirect ways to offer spectators the answers they expect. Mike Flanagan, creator of The Haunting of Hill Househad used his social networks to deliver his first narrative leads for the end of his series The Midnight Club. Pour Scott Pilgrim takes flightspectators can already rejoice in having had a real finale.
