Beaujolais Nouveau has arrived! From one year to the next, its taste can be very different, so what to expect for the 2024 vintage? What is certain is that with the rather cool and rainy summer in the vineyards north of Lyon, it is a rather light vintage this year. Europe 1 tasted it for you in a Lyon cellar, in moderation of course.
A wine that tastes and reflects the weather
Unlike the last two warmer years, the 2024 Beaujolais Nouveau vintage is a particularly fresh wine. Rather classic in the end with its light pink color, explains Fanny Dumeylet, from the Oasis cellar in Oullins, near Lyon. “On the nose, it’s full of small redcurrant-type fruits, which I find very appetizing: we want to taste it! And on the palate, we have this super drinkable, easy, fresh side. It’s full of small red fruits , this gooseberry side, this raspberry side, strawberry side… very delicious!”, she describes with passion.
A freshness which can be explained by the weather. “We didn’t have a very hot summer, we had a very rainy spring. So grapes that had less sun than in the last two years. So less density and therefore this less colorful side”, adds Fanny Dumeylet. Beaujolais 2024 will therefore be perfect with cold meats or small fresh cheeses, a real wine of joy. “It’s very light, easy to drink. Fruit juice. I have a friend who says: ‘Beaujolais doesn’t count!’ And that’s exactly it: it doesn’t count!”, she concludes, smiling.
Which won’t stop you from enjoying it all the same, always in moderation… “Cheers! Cheers!”
