10 firefighters from the Pyrénées-Orientales are taking part in the French teams sent to Valence to help clear and pump areas still flooded.
Approximately 20 days after the deadly floods in Spain, the terrible count stands at 227 deaths, including 219 in the Valencia region alone, when more than a dozen people are still missing. There has been no news for more than two weeks, leading to fears for the worst for the families of the missing.
The Valencia region is completely disfigured by mud and overturned cars that have been abandoned on the roads and damaged in the streets. It was only on November 11 that France announced the sending of 40 rescuers from military civil security formations and around ten firefighters as reinforcements across the Pyrenees, as part of the request for European solidarity. . Spain had until then refused aid from its French neighbors.
“The population expresses moving gratitude”
The 10 firefighters are affiliated with the Sdis des Pyrénées-Orientales. For several days now, Catalan heroes have been wading through the mud to help the local populations. “Our teams are engaged in essential missions: clearing streets to guarantee safety and accessibility, pumping in garages still flooded and cleaning warehouses in the industrial zone”, communicates Sdis 66 on its networks, sharing numerous images of their interventions:
“The population of Valencia, deeply touched by these events, expresses moving gratitude for the presence and support of the French detachment. We are proud to accomplish this mission alongside our colleagues and for the inhabitants of this beautiful city.”
